BIGGER PICTURE 8 – HERE BE DRAGONS

The eighth and penultimate can of our Bigger Picture series is imminent.  This one takes in myths and legends of East Yorkshire.

‘Here Be Dragons’ centres its imagery on the story of the formation of Filey Brigg – in short, that a dangerous local dragon was tricked into eating a large quantity of parkin: the sticky cake got stuck to its teeth so it went to the sea to wash them.  East Yorkshire folk then took the opportunity to ambush the dragon and drowned it.  Some think that Filey Brigg is the fossilised bones of the dragon, but others think that the dragon is still there and just sleeping.

The reputed witch, Peg Fyfe, is also depicted in the print.  Peg Fyfe led a gang of criminals in the Market Weighton area of East Yorkshire during the 17th century.  She was feared and detested in equal measure and infamously flayed a young man alive after he betrayed her before a raid to steal horses.  But she didn’t escape the hangman’s noose.

Bigger Picture is nearly complete – a celebration of the legends, myths and fantastical creatures of Yorkshire. It’s also a treasure map, that builds over nine vastly different 440ml cans of beer and points to one location in Yorkshire where a serious bounty is cached.  We will launch the final beer shortly.
